Days after former member of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council and National Conference leader Trilochan Singh Wazir (67) was found dead inside an apartment in West Delhi’s Basai Darapur, the Delhi Police arrested two men from Jammu on charges of murder and criminal conspiracy.

“On Tuesday morning, we made the arrest of one Rajendra Chaudhary alias Raju, from his in-laws’ house in Jammu and later arrested another accused, identified as Billa,” a police officer said. The two key suspects — transporter Harmeet Singh and Wazir’s friend Harpreet Singh Khalsa, who works with an online news portal — remain absconding.

Initial investigation has revealed that the main motive of the accused was to kidnap Wazir and demand ransom from his family, but they decided to eliminate him after they found that he had transferred all his money to his family in Canada, the police said.

Wazir had come to Delhi on September 2 to catch a flight to Canada but was allegedly shot dead inside Harpreet’s flat. His decomposed body was found on September 9 after a family friend of Wazir spoke to Harpeet to know about the whereabouts of him and informed that he would be coming to Delhi. “The family friend was informed by Harpreet that Harmeet had killed Wazir in a flat in Ramesh Nagar and asked him to recover his body,” a senior police officer said.

On Sunday, The Indian Express had reported that Harmeet Singh posted a purported confession letter on Facebook. In the letter, Harmeet claimed he had killed Wazir because contract killers had been hired to target him and his son. He also claimed he and the other suspect, Khalsa, were going to kill themselves. The police, however, couldn’t catch him as he switched off his phone soon after posting the letter.

Festive offer

The police said Rajendra is a private cab driver in Mumbai and was called to Delhi by Harpeet for some job. Billa and Rajendra are close friends of Harpreet. “During questioning, the accused disclosed that they had decided to kidnap Wazir for a ransom of Rs 2 crore, and when he reached Harpreet’s flat, they offered him water, laced with sedatives. Rajendra was sent to Jammu to pick Wazir’s luggage and he reached on September 3. Wazir was alive till then, but by that time, they all got to know that he had transferred all his money to Canada to his son’s account. Following this, they decided to eliminate him,” the officer said.

Police said the accused persons also disclosed that Harpreet instigated Harmeet after saying that he had hired contract killers to eliminate him and his son. “Wazir was unconscious when they shot him in the head. Harpreet also claimed before them that he wanted to kill Wazir because he suspected Wazir killed his maternal uncle in 1980s and he wanted to take revenge,” said an officer.
