BENGALURU: In a major relief for degree students from outside Karnataka, and for those who have not learned Kannada in school, the government said on Wednesday that they will have to learn “functional Kannada” for one semester only.
Earlier, the state government had said that all degree students from the 2021-22 batch have to learn Kannada for four semesters. TOI had reported on Monday that the government is likely to relax the policy following criticism and concerns from various quarters.

Wednesday’s order says all degree students have to learn two languages for four semesters. Those who have studied Kannada earlier will carry on with it, alongside another language. Those who do not know Kannada will learn it for a semester; for the remaining three semesters, they can choose any other languages. Students are also free to change languages after each semester.
