It's clear that Rangers are under no illusions about the task that awaits them as they take on Lyon on Thursday night.

The Europa League group stage gets under way with a clash with the French giants at Ibrox, with both Steven Gerrard and coach Michael Beale admitting OL may be the best side they've faced in 50 European games.

Though Moussa Dembele is not in the squad for the fixture, it's still a squad brimming with talent with the likes of Jerome Boateng, Xherdan Shaqiri and Lucas Paqueta.

To get the win the crowd at a sold-out Ibrox is desperate to see, Rangers will have to be at their best in a huge European test.

Manager Gerrard will be without defender Filip Helander, who is out until December with a knee injury, as well as Ianis Hagi who is isolating in Romania after coming down with Covid-19 on international duty.

Scotland international Ryan Jack is still out with a calf injury and summer signing Nnamdi Ofoborh is yet to make his debut after being diagnosed with a heart issue.

However, centre-back Connor Goldson is back and raring to go after an isolation issue of his own while Allan McGregor is expected to start in goal.

Gerrard confirmed the defender's return ahead of the match, but didn't rule out a reshuffle.

He said: "I’m confident we’ve got the right amount of cover assuming we don’t have any more issues.

"Connor Goldson comes back and is available for tomorrow, we’ve also got players who can fill in if needs be.

"At the moment, it’s disappointing not to have Fil but we’ll manage."

Kemar Roofe is finally back available on the continent after serving a four-match UEFA ban for his challenge on Slavia Prague goalkeeper Ondrej Kolar last season.
