A Korean engineering, design and procurement consultancy is set to open its U.S. headquarters in Gwinnett County, hiring 30 people as it aims to capitalize on the growing trend of Korean manufacturing investment in the state.

SUNGDO ENG USA, a subsidiary of Seoul-based Sungdo Engineering & Construction Co. Ltd., is operating out of an 11,735-square-foot office space in Suwanee serving as its beachhead in the U.S. market.

The more than 30-year-old company played an early role in outfitting buildings for Korea’s semiconductor and flat-panel display production. Now publicly traded on the KOSDAQ market with offices in nine countries outside Korea, the company specializes in plants that make solar panels, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals and other products. Around the world, it also has a strong portfolio of power plants and refineries, and it performs general construction and civil engineering work on large-scale “new town” plans.

The company was drawn to Georgia due to the growing number of high-tech investments, SUNGDO ENG USA’s chief executive said in a news release.

“We currently have primary clients and projects for a high-tech facility in Georgia and expect to expand more soon,” said CEO Ju-ho Lee in the release, without naming his customers.

A previously listed address put the company in Duluth, and the Georgia Secretary of State’s website notes that SUNGDO incorporated in November 2019 in Suwanee, meaning it has had a foothold in Georgia for nearly two years at the least. Its global headquarters is in Gangnam, a district of Seoul with which Gwinnett recently renewed a sister-community agreement in a remote signing ceremony.

Georgia is home to a number of Korean firms with advanced manufacturing plants, from SK Battery’s huge electric-vehicle battery facility in Commerce to the Hanwha Q CELLS solar plant in Dalton. Back in Korea, SUNGDO has worked with SK subsidiaries as well as a number of giants like POSCO, Hyundai and Samsung. A snapshot of SUNGDO’s work in the Western Hemisphere also includes multiple projects in Mexico and Brazil, but none publicly announced yet in the U.S.

The company’s office and warehouse complex is located at 4318 Brogdon Place Cove in Suwanee. SUNGDO is “hiring for positions in mechanical, electrical and process engineering, according to the news release.
