Farmer trampled to death by wild elephant near Coimbatore
COIMBATORE: A 63-year-old farmer was trampled to death by a wild elephant in his agricultural field near Boluvampatti in Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu in the early hours of Friday.
The deceased has been identified as R Chinnasamy of Viraliyur village. He owned agricultural fields near a hill. He used to go to his agricultural field at night as wild animals often damaged the crops.
On Thursday night, he was sleeping on a cot in the agricultural field when a wild elephant attacked him.
He suffered injuries on his chest and right leg.
The forest department frontline staff received information about the elephant attack and rushed to the spot. They took Chinnasamy to Thondamuthur Government Hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Later, the dead body was sent to the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital for postmortem.
Forest department officials said that the attack might have happened around 1.30am.
The forest department handed over Rs 50,000 as immediate compensation to the victim’s family. The remaining Rs 3.5 lakh will be handed over to the family soon.
