CHENNAI: The T Nagar police booked three people, including a Madurai-based rowdy and a man who posed as the son-in-law of a Union minister, for cheating people by promising to get them jobs with the railway. The con came to light following a complaint by L Muthukumaran who said he had been kidnapped by a gang posing as policemen, who threatened him against approaching police and sought more money from him.

A court sent one of the accused, A Ganapathy, 42, to jail on Friday. But, Muthukumaran of Virugambakkam alleged that Ganapathy was assigned by Karthik Prasanna, who had previously cheated him of 1.25 crore. The complainant said Prasanna told him he was the son-in-law of Assam minister Rajen Gohain and he could get him a job.
Muthukumar paid up to 1.25 crore, but Prasanna allegedly delayed the appointment. Muthukumar later learned that Prasanna had cheated others in the same manner, and demanded his money back. He was then kidnapped and threatened on August 24 and later released.
An officer said the case would be transferred to the Central Crime Branch for further investigation.
