NEW DELHI: In a leadership churn in
West Bengal, the BJP on Monday replaced its state president
Dilip Ghosh with Lok Sabha member
Sukanta Majumdar.
Ghosh, who is also a Lok Sabha member, has now been made BJP's national vice president.
In a statement, the party also announced the appointment of former Uttarakhand governor Baby Rani Maurya as its vice president.
The decision to replace Ghosh comes in the wake of a spate of defections in the Bengal unit of the party, with several MLAs as well as leaders flocking to Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress.
Last week, BJP MP from Asansol Babul Supriyo became the latest party leader to switch over to the Trinamool. Supriyo had recently announced his decision to quit active politics but continued to represent the saffron party as a legislator.
Earlier in June, BJP leader
Mukul Roy had returned to the TMC.
The BJP had made decent gains during the April-May assembly elections in Bengal this year, improving its seat tally from 3 in 2016 to 77 in 2021.
However, it failed to topple the Mamata-led TMC despite launching an all-out campaign blitz.
