BELAGAVI: The department of prisons and correction services is contemplating setting up retail fuel stations on the premises of five jails in North Karnataka. Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) has submitted its proposal, a copy of which is available with TOI, to the department of prisons.
The submission comes on the back of some meetings being held to deliberate on the issue, and after a survey was conducted to estimate the possible revenue that could be generated from the sites where the fuel stations are proposed to be built.

Binay Kumar, head of Belagavi sales division for IOCL, has submitted his proposal to the deputy inspector general (prisons), Belagavi to consider the possibility of setting up retail fuel stations on the premises of jails given the possibility of these facilities generating good revenue.
An official at Hindalga Prison in Belagavi said that the department felt the idea was feasible, and the proposal had been sent to the head office for consideration. “Once the fuel stations are built, the inmates will be deployed to work there. The revenue from these facilities will be used to develop prisons and strengthen security. The inmates, meanwhile, will get some experience of running a fuel station,” the official said.
IOCL has decided to build the fuel stations at Hindalga Prison in Belagavi, Gokak sub-jail, Bailhongal jail and the prisons in Vijayapura and Dharwad. “We have visited the proposed sites for these stations, and our team of engineers has conducted a survey, and we have estimated the revenue that we can generate from the stations,” Binay Kumar said.
Dealership model
The proposed fuel stations will be set up on a dealership model once the memorandum of understanding (MoU) is inked with the department of prisons.

“Since we are dealing with a government department, there will be bidding for the dealership. According to our estimate, the department can earn up to Rs 15.7 lakh per month from five fuel stations. We estimate that revenue Hindalga Prison can earn up to Rs 3.8 lakh per month,” Binay Kumar added.
Chief superintendent of prisons for Hindalga Krishnakumar told TOI, “The proposal is still in the nascent stage, and the final decision will be taken by the head office.”
