Mahant Narendra Giri's hand-written note clearly states that the seer had commited suicide and also has named his estranged disciple Anand Giri and the priest of the Hanuman temple, Adya Tiwari and his son Sandeep Tiwari.
The note which was exclusively accessed by India TV states that the seer was mentally harassed and being blackmailed by Anand Giri. He wrote, "Anand Giri was going to release a morphed image and video of me with a woman, which will tarnish my image and would bring disgrace to the position which I hold."
He has also appealed to the Uttar Pradesh administration to punish Anand Giri and only then he would find peace. He said, "I had tried committing suicide last week but couldn't muster the courage." The Mahant wrote that he had lived his life with respect and dignity and could no longer bear the humiliation.
The Uttar Pradesh Police has detained Anand Giri from Haridwar, said an official on Tuesday. He was detained on Monday night after a case for abetting suicide was lodged against him, ADG (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar said.
The suicide note is also a will of sorts because it mentions the Mahant's wishes about his succession. He has also clearly given instructions about the functioning of muth and has named Balbir Giri as his succession.
Top seer Mahant Narendra Giri was found dead on Monday at Baghambari Muth in Prayagraj. The influential Hindu seer was the president of Akhil Bharatiya Akhada Parishad, the largest organisation of sadhus in India.
According to the police, the seer's body was found hanging from the ceiling by his disciples on Monday.
