LUCKNOW: Around three months after the state government announced its population policy, chief minister Yogi Adityanath said the law on population control will be brought “when the time is right”.
Speaking to a news channel on Tuesday, Yogi said the state’s Population Policy 2021-2030 was announced with the aim of achieving sustainable development goals of controlling mother and child mortality.
A law on this would also be introduced when the time is right, he added.
“There is a time for everything. When we said we will build the Ram Temple, people asked us the date for it. Without announcing any date, Prime Minister Narendra Modi performed the ‘bhumi pujan’ in the middle of the pandemic. The Centre similarly removed Article 370. Everything has a time. The government won’t hide it and will make proper announcement,” the CM said.
Uttar Pradesh’s population policy aims to bring gross fertility rate down to 2.1 by 2026 and to 1.9 by 2030.
Asked why he was responding to tweets of Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, Yogi said he does not react to anyone’s comments, but responds if he feels someone has insulted the people of the state.
“Akhilesh has been disrespecting the people of UP. It’s the nature of the two parties that came together in 2017 (SP and Congress) to insult UP and its people,” he said, adding that contrary to Yadav’s claims, there has not been a single riot in the state after 2017.
The chief ministeralso hit out at the Opposition for getting ‘annoyed’ on his use of the term ‘ abba jaan’ and said, “It’s strange that those who want Muslim votes are uncomfortable with the use of the term abba jaan. BJP has always worked on the mantra of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas aur Sabka Vishwas.”
“While the previous CMs built their own palaces, we provided houses to 42 lakh poor, toilets to more than 2 crore people and free ration to over 15 crore people,” Yogi added.
