The ruling DMK on Thursday appealed to the people, farmers, farm workers and traders to take part in the proposed nationwide strike on September 27 by farmer unionsand urged its functionaries as well to make the "Bharat Bandh" a success in Tamil Nadu.The party stood with farmers protesting -in Delhi and other places- against the farm laws, DMK's state agriculture wing chief NKK Periyasamy said, adding, the Centre was however autocratic and does not pay heed to them.
Tamil Nadu sees upward trajectory of daily Covid-19 infections
Daily cases of Covid-19 in Tamil Nadu witnessed an upward trend as 1,745 people were found to be infected on Thursday, pushing the overall caseload to 26,52,115.As many as 27 people succumbed to the virus in the last 24 hours, aggregating to 35,427 till date, a medical bulletin said.With Tamil Nadu reporting an increase in the new infections over the last few weeks, the government accelerated its vaccination programme by announcing the third edition of Mega Vaccination camp scheduled to be held on September 26.
HC orders shifting of dumping ground in Chennai
The Madras High Court has directed the state government authorities to shift the dumping yard in the city's Perungudi and Alandur elsewhere and ascertain the feasibility of declaring the Pallikaranai marsh land there as a bird sanctuary and as a Ramsar site.A Ramsar site is a wetland designated to be of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. Justice N Kirubakaran (since retired) gave the direction recently, while passing orders on a batch of petitioners, who apprehended arrest for alleged encroachment and fraudulent sale of a portion of the Pallikaranai marsh land to third parties. They were granted the relief by an order passed in December, 2014. By this recent order, the judge relaxed the conditions stipulated earlier in 2014. Even though these petitions were for anticipatory bail, as they involved alleged illegal transfer of marsh land, the judge said he was invoking Article 226 of the Constitution and issuing necessary directions in public interest to protect the marsh lands.

Tamil Nadu to hold 3rd edition of mega vaccination camp on Sept 26: Health Minister
The Tamil Nadu government would hold its third edition of the Mega Covid Vaccination Camp on September 26, targeting to inoculate 15 lakh people, state minister Ma Subramanian said on Thursday.The decision to hold the third vaccination camp follows the success of the first and second camps, which surpassed the targeted number of people receiving the jabs set by the health department.Talking to reporters, Minister for Medical and Family Welfare Ma Subramanian said on September 12 the department conducted the first camp targeting 20 lakh people. However it surpassed the target by vaccinating 21.98 lakh people.Similarly on September 19, during the second camp 16.43 lakh people were administered the covid vaccine as against the projected 15 lakh, he said.
College student stabbed to death by her boyfriend
A college student was stabbed to death by her boyfriend near Tambaram railway station. He also tried to kill himself and has been hospitalised.

Three-year-old dies as part of house collapses; villagers blame it on stone quarry blasts
A three-year-old boy from a village near Radhapuram was killed as a portion of the house collapsed on him on Wednesday afternoon. Agitated villagers who staged a protest blamed the blasts at the stone quarries close by as the cause of the incident that claimed the life of the toddler. Meteorologists said the upper air circulation, or streams of air that flow at higher altitudes in the atmosphere, supports the wind convergence that may occur when the weak westerlies allow the entry of easterlies into the land. Tamil Nadu on Wednesday witnessed 1,682 new coronavirus cases with Coimbatore, Erode and Tiruppur districts contributing the maximum numbers, taking the overall caseload to 26,50,370. With 21 deaths due to the infection, including six in private hospitals and 15 in government facilities, the toll has risen to 35,400.With 1,627 patients getting discharged following treatment today, the cumulative recoveries stand at 25,97,943. The number of active cases, including isolation as on today, remains at 17,027, according to a bulletin here.
