Three students in a government-run residential composite PU college in
Hanur in
Chamarajanagar district have tested positive for Covid-19. The entire college and hostels have now been sanitised, but the college has been allowed to carry on with academic activities.
Education department authorities say none of the three students had come in contact with any of the other students but as a precautionary measure,
RT-PCR tests were conducted on all the other students.
None have tested positive so far.
These infections come on the heels of two students of another government-run school in
Yelandur testing positive. However, the rest of the students tested negative in that school too. Sources say two boys and a girl student of the Hanur college have been infected.
“These students returned home for Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. Perhaps, they contracted the virus in their villages. When they returned to the college, they had fever and other symptoms and paramedical staff on duty suspected Covid-19. RT-PCR tests were immediately conducted,” officials said.
Authorities say there are 115 students on the rolls. “Since the other 112 students are not infected, as per a decision taken by the
health department, the school does not have to close. The infected students did not come in contact with the others,” said Swamy TR, block education officer, Hanur.
Officials from the health and the education department visited the college on Tuesday and reviewed standard operating procedures.
