Rain activity picks up pace in Goa, IMD forecasts heavy showers

Compared to the past few days, there is an increase in the rainfall activity over Goa from Tuesday onwards. Significant weather systems like a low pressure area over the Gangetic West Bengal and moisture incursion due to the North westerly winds are prevailing, thus bringing rain to Goa.

PANAJI: Compared to the past few days, there is an increase in the rainfall activity over Goa from Tuesday onwards. Significant weather systems like a low pressure area over the Gangetic West Bengal and moisture incursion due to the North westerly winds are prevailing, thus bringing rain to Goa.
There is possibility of heavy rainfall exceeding 6cms in 24 hours over one or two places in Goa is likely on September 22 as well, the India meteorological department (IMD) forecast reads.
There are also chances of thunder and lightning at isolated places.
“From September 21 onwards, the cloud formation and rainfall activity over Goa has increased compared to the past 48 hours. Till 8.30am on Tuesday, the highest rainfall of 2cms was reported by the Dabolim and Margao rain gauge stations,” IMD said.
Light to moderate rainfall was experienced in parts of Goa on Tuesday with Mapusa, parts of Bicholim and Pernem reporting receiving rainfall till about afternoon.
A follow up report of rainfall recorded till 12.30pm on Tuesday reveals that the Panaji rain gauge station has reported 3cms of rainfall and Mormugao received 2.7cms of rainfall, while Mapusa reported 2.5cms of rainfall.
The state’s cumulative rainfall from June 1 till September 21 is 302cms, IMD said with the state average 5% higher than normal.
