Women's soccer defeats Vermont in 2OT 1-0

Anand nets game-winner in 103rd minute as BU gets win in America East opener

VESTAL, N.Y. - Junior forward Maya Anand scored the game-winning goal early in the second overtime to lift Binghamton women's soccer (5-4-1, 1-0 America East) to a 1-0 win over visiting Vermont (3-4-1, 0-1 AE) in the conference opener for both teams Sunday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

In the 103rd minute, freshman midfielder Maria Poulos took possession from a Catamounts defender just outside the box and found Anand in the middle 12 yards out. Anand faked her defender and slotted in her sixth goal of the season and league-leading fourth game-winner to the lower right corner.

The Bearcats owned a sizable 23-7 shots advantage but couldn't cash in through regulation and the first extra period.

"This epitomizes America East play," head coach Neel Bhattacharjee said. "A one-goal game with the intensity ... the urgency ... and the game came down to a few key moments. I was very happy with the effort after halftime. We played a little slow and a little safe in that first half but from the second half on, we were more courageous with the attack and put our pace and stamp on the game. When we did that we got Vermont on their heels a bit. We got some great opportunities to score in regulation but we are happy with the effort and the result. It's tough to get three points in the America East and we took care of business at home today."

Senior keeper Haylee Poltorak made five saves to notch her fourth shutout of the season. The Bearcats held a 17-3 shots advantage after halftime.

Binghamton is off until playing at UMass Lowell next Sunday afternoon.
