Capital’s Most Wanted: Catch me if you can

Around midnight last week, a 20-member team from Alipur police station gathered outside the rusting gates of a nondescript house. “I have not spoken to my son in five years; we just want this gang war to end,” she told the officers, who mechanically clicked photos of the area, to brief their senior officers about the day’s developments, and left.

The team is one of many units of the Delhi Police camping out in outer Delhi, Rohini and parts of Haryana, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, anxiously waiting for any information about 26-year-old Jitender Mann alias Gogi, a kingpin whose rise has been as swift as it is brutal — graduating from providing muscle for Delhi University elections to eliminating rivals at will, mostly by shooting them in the face. 'School mitras' to help bring parents closer to management panels in Delhi govt schools

Delhi government schools will seek help from volunteer parents, who will be called 'school mitras', to bridge the gap between School Management Committees (SMCs) and parents, according to officials.

The move comes following observations made in a recently released report by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) that despite active involvement of the SMCs in the schools, 63 per cent parents of the students going to government schools in Delhi do not know about the existence of SMCs.

"This is an uncomfortable sign since SMCs are meant to act as a bridge between parents and the schools, a means by which various concerns of the parents can reach the school management. However, this gap seems to exist because there is no structure or mechanism by which SMC members can reach out to the parents on an ongoing basis," said Zareen Taj, Additional Director, Directorate of Education (DoE).

"In order to bridge the gap between SMCs and parents, volunteer parents have been nominated as 'school mitras' in the schools to render community services by assisting SMCs. To ensure smooth functioning of SMCs and school mitra, it is necessary to have a Zonal Monitoring Committee for the 'Parents Outreach Programme'," Taj added. (PTI)

New WHO standards for air quality: Delhi needs to accelerate action, say experts

The World Health Organisation (WHO) released its revised air quality guidelines on Wednesday, lowering the the recommended levels of pollutants from the existing guidelines that were framed in 2005. What do these revised guidelines mean for Delhi?

Experts say that the revised guidelines emphasize the need to accelerate action to deal with pollutants considering that Delhi’s air pollution levels are far from the National Air Quality Standards.

“In 2020, annual average PM2.5 levels for Delhi was roughly 98. We are way off the health-based target that WHO is talking about. If we have to make public health central to air pollution mitigation, we need aggressive strategies to reduce emissions at source,” said Anumita Roy Chowdhury, Executive Director for Research and Advocacy at the Centre for Science and Environment. Among men who attacked Asaddudin Owaisi home: College dropout, nursing staffer who lost job

A ‘senior’ Hindu Sena member who dropped out of college, a nursing staffer who lost his job during the lockdown, an autorickshaw driver and two factory workers — these are the five men who vandalised MP Asaddudin Owaisi’s house at Delhi’s Ashoka Road on Tuesday, and were subsequently arrested.

In a Facebook live video shot on Tuesday evening, one of the men, Lalit Kumar (25), can be seen claiming he is the head of Hindu Sena’s Delhi wing and calling Owaisi a “jihadi”. “Main Asad Owaisi jihadi ke paas aaya hoon usko sabak sikhane (I have come to teach the jihadi Asad Owaisi a lesson)… Jai Shi Ram,” he says. Two men can be seen breaking the nameplate with axes, while others are seen hurling stones — and an axe — at the house. Read the full report here.

3 deaths in Nuh in a week spark alarm in village, officials suspect dengue

Three people, including a 12-year-old boy, have died in Nuh’s Akera village in just a week, with officials suspecting dengue as a possible cause. The health department has started screening all suspected fever cases in the village for dengue and malaria.

Their families said they had dengue-like symptoms and died within three-four days of contracting a fever, between September 15 and 22. Residents also claimed the department only swung into action after a boy, Samin, died Wednesday. Officials, however, said they routinely conduct fogging and that cases of viral fever are generally high during monsoons.

Gogi vs Tillu: Capital’s killer rivalry

It was in 2016 that gangster Jitender Maan alias Gogi managed to escape from police custody and, in the hopes of killing his rival Sunil alias Tillu Tajpuriya, formed a gang with two key lieutenants — Kuldeep alias Fajja and Rohit Moi.

But the balance of power shifted against him when the trio were arrested from a flat in Gurgaon even as Tillu joined hands with other prominent gangsters — Neeraj Bawana, Naveen Bali, Sunil Rathi and Cheenu.

Earlier this year, Gogi was booked under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) for hatching a conspiracy to aid Fajja’s escape — a last ditch attempt to revive his gang.
