CHENNAI: Wednesday morning’s stormy weather is just a start, weathermen said advising the city to brace itself for more intense showers till the end of the month.
For the next 48 hours, IMD has forecast thunderstorms with moderate rain in the city and suburbs and heavy spells at times over a few places. Maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 34°C and 25°C.
“The rain will be due to an upper air circulation and convection,” said N Puviarasan, director, area cyclone warning centre, IMD, Chennai.
Meteorologists said the upper air circulation, or streams of air that flow at higher altitudes in the atmosphere, supports the wind convergence that may occur when the weak westerlies allow the entry of easterlies into the land. This may result in convective activity. The activity may bring rain to interior regions during the day and may shift closer to the coast at night.
Wednesday morning spells left 10cm in DGP office rain gauge, 9cm in Taramani, 8cm in Nandanam and 5cm each in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam weather stations. Nungambakkam has recorded 55.78cm and Meenambakkam 48.37cm so far this June-September season, which is 15.81cm and 4.42cm in excess.
Blogger Pradeep John said the city and suburbs may see showers every other day at least till September 28 or 29. “Though models show rainfall every day, we may for sure receive some spells every alternate day. Nungambakkam may cross 60cm this season,” he said.
