Police in Oyama, Tochigi Prefecture, have arrested a 56-year-old man after he hit a police patrol car with an iron bar and threatened officers.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 3 a.m. Saturday, Fuji TV reported. Police said the wife of Tomoyuki Shirota, a demolition worker, called 110 and said her husband was swinging a bar and making threats.

When police arrived, Shirota came out onto the street and swung his bar at the patrol car, smashing one of its front lights. He also threatened officers before being subdued.

Police said Shirota, who appeared to be intoxicated at the time, has admitted to the charge.

That’s cute, Tomoyuki.

You’ve excelled at what most 3 year olds can do.

For a turn of recent events in the news in Japan, it’s a relief to hear his wife & family are safe & uninjured.

His local ‘bar’ was closed so perhaps he decided to improvise with another at home?

Now, he’ll spend ‘a little time’ behind some.

The casualties & penalties could have been much greater IF he had ‘hit a bar with a police car’. Good work NPA in subduing him quickly.

The ubiquitous "iron bar" again.

As for " appeared to be intoxicated", you could bet the farm on that one though with the bars supposed to be closed he must have been hitting the shochu pretty hard at home. I imagine that his wife has had a pretty hard time over the years.

His experience as a demolition worker probably helped his aim in taking out a headlight.

Good work NPA in subduing him quickly.

I believe it's good work, local police. The NPA's role is to oversee the local (prefectural) police, based on what I've read.

It is actually kind of feelgood story..... he attacked a victim that can fight back, the victim did fight back, nobody gut hurt, and there is no doubt to what happened. The police got a good training exercise, and he gets some time behind bars to cool off. Good all around.

I stand corrected *@Josugi 5:58pm: “**Good Work, LOCAL police!*”

And “Well Done!” to the National Police Agency (NPA) for establishing a set of uniform training, standards, policies and procedures for local police to ensure fairness and the safety of Japan’s citizens, resident foreign workers and visiting tourists.

The point is,…

as @Zaphod 6:16pm points out,

we can feel good nobody got hurt and police are well-trained in restraint.

Agreed - “Good all around”.

" came out onto the street and swung his bar at the patrol car, smashing one of its front lights. He also threatened officers before being subdued."

now they have to focus on their own increasing types of domestic antisocial adversaries in the future like in many countries these days.

"swinging a bar and making threats"

Reads like another nut crack out of control

"appeared to be intoxicated at the time, has admitted to the charge."

Obviously his marriage was going well. Bashing a cop car lol. Do cops in Japan wear body cams? Never stopped to think about that because I have said nasty things to police in the past for always trying to frisk me for weapons while I'm out for a jog or basically doing nothing except being in public.
