Remnants of Cyclone Gulab could give rise to another cyclone in Arabian Sea by Sept 30: IMD

Cyclone Gulab, that crossed Andhra Pradesh coast on Sunday evening and into a deep depression during its west-ward movement, could give birth into a fresh cyclone which will emerge in the Arabian Sea later this week.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday said that the present system, when attains a wind speed that of a cyclone (wind speed 68 to 87kms/hr), would then be given a new name. If realised, it will possibly be only the third such occasion since 1996 when a cyclone -- after making landfall -- would go on to strengthen and re-emerge as a fresh system of ‘cyclone’ category in the North Indian Ocean region (Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea together).

In 2018, Very Severe Cyclone Gaja -- formed in the Bay of Bengal -- had crossed the Tamil Nadu coast and later re-emerged in the Arabian Sea from central Kerala. This cyclone had stayed in the Bay of Bengal for nearly 10 days before its landfall and had one of the longest cyclone tracks covering 3,418kms. After 1996, cyclone Gaja was the first to display the first ever looping track over the Bay of Bengal. --Anjali Marar reports
