(WFXR) — An area of high pressure continues to dominate the region for the beginning of the new week. While this means fair weather for Southwest Virginia Monday, we will notice warmer temperatures in the forecast.

It will be another cool start with Monday morning temperatures in the 40s and 50s. Some patchy river valley fog may impact the morning commute. Otherwise, it will be a mostly sunny day. A southwest wind will help temperatures reach the upper 70s and lower 80s by the afternoon hours. Overnight temperatures won’t be as chilly with lows in the mid-50s and into the lower 60s.

Although some clouds will pass through Tuesday, it will be slightly warmer outside due to a breeze from the west. High temperatures will mainly be in the upper 70s and into the mid-80s. A weak front will pass through the region late Tuesday into Wednesday. Some showers and storms may pass through portions of the Alleghany Highlands, Roanoke Valley, and Central Virginia, but rain will be hit-or-miss.

Once the front clears the area Wednesday morning, we’ll notice decreasing clouds overhead. High temperatures will range from the upper 70s and into the mid-80s.

We’ll return to a quiet weather pattern Thursday with a mix of sun and clouds overhead. Temperatures will start to cool down again as we approach the weekend. While highs will be in the 70s and low 80s for Thursday, we’ll notice more afternoon temperatures in the fall-like 70s for Friday into the weekend. Cool morning temperatures will also return to the forecast with lows in the 50s and 40s.

Tracking the Tropics

Sam became a major hurricane over the weekend and is a Category 4 hurricane as of Sunday evening. The storm will remain strong as it passes by the Lesser Antilles for the next few days. While Bermuda could feel impacts from this storm by the weekend, Sam will be steered away from the United States.

There are three other disturbances in the Atlantic that have the potential to develop into tropical cyclones. It may be another five days before we see our next named storm develop.
