Georgia lawmakers looking to boost sagging aviation workforce
Dave Williams reports that few Georgians realize that aerospace is the Peach State’s second largest manufacturing industry or that Delta Air Lines is Atlanta’s second largest employer. But now, that lofty status is being threatened by shortages of both pilots and aviation technicians. Both are critical if aviation is to remain one of Georgia’s leading industries, said state Rep. David Knight, R-Griffin.

Delta pushes airlines to share no-fly lists names
Kelly Yamanouchi reports that Delta Air Lines shared with the Federal Aviation Administration the names of more than 600 passengers it has banned for unruly behavior, and asked other airlines to also share their no-fly lists. “A list of banned customers doesn’t work as well if that customer can fly with another airline,” Atlanta-based Delta wrote in a memo in advance of a Congressional hearing this week on air rage.

Synovus plans to sell 250,000-square feet of downtown office space to Columbus
Nick Wooten and report that Synovus will sell six of its downtown office facilities to the city of Columbus for nearly $25 million, if approved by Council. The proposal will be considered by Columbus Council during its Sept. 28 meeting, according to a Friday release from Synovus spokesperson Lee Underwood.

Jill Wu reports that Kathelen and Dan Amos have pledged a $5 million gift to Emory University School of Medicine to establish The Kathelen and Dan Amos Medical Student Loan Forgiveness Program: Improving Access to Primary Care in Georgia. In addition to engaging young talent and attracting Emory School of Medicine physician graduates back to Georgia, this program will address the issue of physicians-in-training moving into more lucrative sub-specialties, instead of following office-based primary care tracks.

Fair Districts: Redistricting proposal should show more majority-minority districts
Asia Ashley reports, as legislators prepare for redistricting in Georgia, nonpartisan redistricting groups expect to see increased representation of majority-minority districts as the partisan gap has narrowed since the last redistricting cycle 10 years ago. Fair Districts GA and the Princeton Gerrymandering Project analyzed 2020 Census data, redistricting maps and election data from the last 20 years to determine what Georgia’s redistricting committee should present for fair representation among voters.

Federal judge hints court might wait to rule on Georgia appeal of anti-abortion law
Jill Nolin reports that a decision on whether a federal judge was right to rule Georgia’s anti-abortion law unconstitutional may not come until after the U.S. Supreme Court rules on Mississippi’s own restrictive measure. The state’s appeal of the federal judge’s ruling went before a three-judge panel in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit.

Sen. Anavitarte calls for statue of Clarence Thomas at Ga. Capitol
State Sen. Jason Anavitarte called for the General Assembly to place a statue of United States Supreme Court Associate Justice Clarence Thomas on Capitol grounds in a statement issued last week. “The grounds of the Georgia Capitol should be a place where visitors can connect with their elected officials, as well as a place that provides opportunities to learn about Georgia history,” Anavitarte said.

Trump intensifies war with Georgia GOP leaders at Perry rally
Greg Bluestein reports that former President Donald Trump returned to Georgia on Saturday to showcase a trio of loyalists he’s endorsed in 2022 elections, deepening an internal rift among state Republicans that helped fuel upset Democratic victories in the last election cycle. The pro-Trump slate took center stage at a rally at the Georgia National Fairgrounds, as the former president pushed to continue to refashion the state GOP in his mold and promoted falsehoods that the state election was tainted by widespread election fraud.
