A fresh low-pressure area has formed over North-West Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of West Bengal on Tuesday even a predecessor depression (from cyclone 'Gulab') was located about 60 km East-North-East of Parbhani and 250 km South-West of Nagpur buffeted by heavy rain around.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the system would weaken and emerge into the North-East Arabian Sea and adjoining Gujarat coast on Thursday, where it is likely to intensify back into a depression over the North-East Arabian Sea by Friday and 'kick back' rains to parts of the West Coast.

More rain for Gujarat

The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy falls at isolated places over Gujarat on Wednesday and heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over the plains of West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, North Madhya Maharashtra and North Konkan and heavy over Marathwada.

On Thursday, heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast at isolated places over Saurashtra and Kutch while it will be heavy at isolated places over Odisha, plains of West Bengal and East Gujarat.

Central India swamped

Meanwhile, the depression dumped very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall till Tuesday morning over Telangana, Odisha, Saurashtra, Kutch, Marathwada, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Maharashtra, East Gujarat, Vidarbha, Rajasthan, West Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Coastal Karnataka, North Interior Karnataka and Lakshadweep.

Rainfall amounts

Significant rainfall amounts (in cm) recorded include: Nizamabad-23; Dantewada-18; Nicobar and Nancowry-16 each; Nanded-15; Ramgundam, Cuttack, Vishakhapatnam, West Godavari, Aurangabad and Coimbatore-13 each; Amreli-12; Beed, Chandrapur, and Jalgaon-11 each; Palakkad, Chandrapur, Osmanabad, Latur and Dungarpur-10 each; Mehsana and Buldana-9 each; Gajapati, Gir Somnath, Jalna, Bir, Krishna, Vijayawada and Ernakulam-8 each; Kottayam, Kannur, Thrissur, Medak, Kothagudem, Jamnagar, Junagarh, Morbi, Porbandar, Jajpur, Hingoli, Parbhani, Banswara, Kolhapur and Dewas-7 each.

Monsoon trough weakens

Significantly on Tuesday evening, the main monsoon trough over has become disorganised in signs that the ground is being prepared along the North-Western border of the country for withdrawal of the 2021 season. A prevailing circulation over North-East Arabian Sea also weakened as if on cue.

But the secondary trough from North Konkan ran down from North Coastal Andhra Pradesh across the embedded cyclonic circulation in the depression located over South-West Vidarbha.

An extended forecast valid from October 3 to 5 has predicted fairly widespread to widespread rainfall over East and adjoining Central India and North-East India while it will be scattered to fairly widespread over parts of Central India, Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and isolated to scattered elsewhere.
