KOLAR: Sixteen monkeys were poisoned to death and their bodies were dumped off the national highway near Kolar on Wednesday morning.
The bodies of the monkeys were put into gunny bags and abandoned on the road connecting Tamaka and Nadupalli village. Passersby alerted Gulpet police. Forest department officials too were informed. “There were four dead baby monkeys,” said a police officer.

Officials shifted the carcasses to Maderahalli forest area where a postmortem was conducted to ascertain the reason for death. Gulpet sub-inspector Vedhavathy said they are examining the CCTV footage from the area. The monkeys were poisoned and the bodies were dumped here, she added.
In a similar incident that took place in Hassan in the first week of August, at least 35 monkeys were packed in gunny bags and thrown on the highway. Five people were arrested.
