ScreenSkills Select Endorses 18 UK Animation and VFX Courses

Government-sponsored group identifies educational programs that promote diversity while producing ‘industry ready’ talent; Nottingham Trent University and Bournemouth University have been designated as having strong industry ties while featuring high-quality course content.

ScreenSkills Select, a process designed to identify courses of study in animation and visual effects that produce students that are industry ready, has identified and endorsed 18 animation programs in the UK that work closely with the animation industry and feature high-quality content.

Programs are selected that focus on areas of skill shortages, such as animation, while promoting diversity. Nottingham Trent University’s (NTU) animation degree has a cohort consisting of 70% female students which supports broadening the range of talent.

Bournemouth University has had five animation and VFX degree courses endorsed which allows the school to promote itself as a center of excellence in the field of animation and VFX, aiding in student recruitment and deepening its industry ties. The endorsed courses are:

  • BA (Hons) Computer Animation Technical Arts
  • BA (Hons) Computer Animation Art and Design
  • MSc Computer Animation and Visual Effects
  • MA 3D Computer Animation
  • MA Digital Effects

“In many parts of the screen industries, there are a range of challenges including skills shortages and a narrow talent pool which we all know needs to be addressed,” commented ScreenSkills director of vocational skills Tim Weiss. “It is why we are particularly pleased to endorse these excellent animation degrees from NTU and Bournemouth University above and beyond the quality of their teaching and how they develop industry-ready students.”

ScreenSkills Select was developed by ScreenSkills, supported by the BFI, awarding National Lottery funds as part of the Future Film Skills strategy. To be endorsed, screen courses are evaluated as developing industry-ready students while having well-established links with local industry employers as well as delivering excellent course content.
