PATNA: A police team including Lalminiya Police outpost in-charge Ghulam Sarvar was allegedly attacked and was kept hostage for at least five hours at Malin Bigha village under Laukaha police station area in Bihar's Madhubani on Friday night by irate villagers who alleged that they were trying to rig the panchayat polls in favour of a particular candidate.
The team including two officers, two constables and six home guard jawans was taken hostage at around 6pm and was set free after 11pm only when senior authorities intervened, as per police.

Altogether 39 villagers and a crowd of at least 400 unknown persons have been made accused in an FIR registered with Laukaha police station on Saturday. The complaint was given by Sarvar himself. None of the accused were arrested till Saturday night.
Sarvar said villagers had torn the uniform of ASI Mehboob Alam, constables and the home guard jawans. He said incident took place near booth number 53 and 54 in the village.
“Villagers started alleging that we were rigging poll in favour of a minority Mukhia candidate who was contesting from Karmegh (West) panchayat, a reserved seat for women,” he said.
He said one Nasib Lal Yadav, whose daughter-in-law is also in fray for mukhiya post from same panchayat, is the main accused who had mobilised and instigated the villagers against the police team.
“The voting was being carried out through EVM and none could produce any evidence of rigging. We all were kept captive inside house of one Mahindra Yadav from around 6pm to 11pm. Senior authorities reached and rescued us afterwards,” Sarvar said.

Sarvar claimed he had continuously cracked down against liquor smugglers of Malin Bigha who had made the village hub after taking charge in February 2020 due to which he was targeted.
Madhubani DM Amit Kumar said the matter had come to his knowledge too but all villagers understood the situation when administrative authorities from Phoolparas subdivision were sent there to talk.
“Villagers demanded transfer of OP incharge and repoll. But no evidence was present against police or for poll rigging. Situation was normalised afterwards and team was set free,” he added.
