Andrea Henry is leaving Transworld to join Picador as editorial director.
Henry takes over, with a slightly adjusted remit, from Kris Doyle, who left Picador in August to pursue personal goals in other fields. She will join the team on 6th December and report to Picador publisher Philip Gwyn Jones.
She has previously worked as an editor at Orion, Headline, Random House and HarperCollins. She was Mirror Books editor from 2000 to 2005 and also spent a five-year stint as a teacher of English in inner-London state schools.
Picador said her experience, strategic ability and “calm, considered and wise approach” made her a “dream appointment”. The Pan Macmillan imprint said: “She brings her aptitudes for personality-led non-fiction, gift and quirk publishing, illustrated books, feminism and issue-led writing to the list with the intent to extend Picador’s reach and range in non-fiction, looking to vary its routes to market and its sources, always mindful that all projects meet Picador’s needs for originality, excellence, beauty and durability.”
In her most recent role as editorial director for Doubleday and Bantam at Transworld, Henry has published work from Julia Gillard and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Viv Groskop, Alicia Garza, Jenni Murray, Mary Portas and Sophy Roberts.
Henry said: “I have had seven great years with Transworld, working with a brilliant bunch of colleagues and some wonderful authors, but I am delighted to be making the move to Picador. It’s an imprint I’ve admired from afar for a long time. What an honour to have the opportunity to be a part of such a rich list, and to be joining a publishing house at the top of its game. I’m excited to begin work with some great existing authors and, with a view to expanding Picador’s offering, to go in search of the new.”
Gwyn Jones added: “All of us at Picador are so excited about what Andrea will bring to the list. The imprint has had tremendous success these past few years, but we believe that there is still unused latent potential in the Picador brand with which we can take the imprint into areas of the market it hasn’t often yet reached. As we go into our 50th birthday year in a spirit of celebration, renewal and adventure, we are sure some of the iconic books of our next 50 years will be brought in by Andrea.”
