Soccer Politics Meets the Abraham Accords

On a day in which Israeli and American leaders celebrated the Abraham Accords, the term that has come to signify normalization agreements between Israel and Arab states, Palestinians registered their disapproval of what they said was the politicization of sport’s leading jewel – World Cup Football. At issue was the participation in Abraham Accord events by the sport’s head man, Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA, the international organization that oversees the sport. While Americans are still warming up to the chase for the cup, it has arguably been the most celebrated sports cycle for generations. Nevertheless, Infantino’s Israel visit was the first by a FIFA president. But the sport is wildly popular among Palestinians as well, but they were upset at the FIFA chief attending the Israeli events to the point where Infantino was not invited to the Palestinian Authority. Among reasons cited were his attendance at a gala hosted by former US Ambassador David Friedman at a new complex built in the area of a Muslim cemetery, with the presence of former officials from the Trump Administration. Another point of contention bound to upset the Palestinians: A spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said on Twitter that in discussions with the Israeli PM, Infantino “raised the idea that Israel would host the #WorldCup in 2030, together with other countries in the region, most notably with the United Arab Emirates.”
