SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Montevideo’s Emily Brace has advanced to the semifinals after playing two rounds of the Section 3A individual tournament Thursday.
Brace, the No. 2 seed, opened with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Abigail Jimenez of Yellow Medicine East . Brace then beat Madelyn Matthies of Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.
Brace will face Abbigail Athey of Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta/West Central Area in the semifinals on Tuesday at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter. Athey is the No. 2 seed and won two matches Thursday.
In doubles play, Montevideo, Lac qui Parle/Valley/Dawson-Boyd and Benson/Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg all had doubles teams advance to the semifinals by going 2-0 in Sioux Falls.
Montevideo seniors Tyra Sandven and Mathea Jorgenson are the top seed and beat Emma Keller and Reagan Streich from Yellow Medicine East 6-0, 6-0 in the first round and Benson/KMS’ Eleanor Habben and Bella Quisberg 6-2, 7-6 in the quarterfinals.

LQPV/D-B’s Sarah Halvorson and Claire Lowry are the fourth seed and will play Montevideo’s Sandven and Jorgenson. Halvorson and Lowry beat MACCRAY’s Tayte Nokleby and Alex Dirksen 6-4, 6-3, then edged Kjersten Nibbe and Hope Sperr of Morris/Chokio-Alberta/West Central Area 7-6 (5), 6-2. Nibbe and Sperr were the fifth seed.
The Benson/KMS team of sophomore Elise Duncan and senior Hannah Helms won twice despite being the sixth seed, upsetting the third seed from Luverne, Olivia Wieneke and Kristin Rud 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-2. Duncan and Helms beat Hannah Oie and Kayla Jahn of LQPV/D-B 6-2, 7-5 in the first round.
At stake are two singles spots and two doubles teams spots for the state Class A individual tournament Oct. 28-29 at the Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
