Mariners host Soquel in key match Tuesday

Holly Hegna, Autumn Zaretsky and Ashley Lavender earned singles wins in straight sets, and Aptos High’s girls tennis beat host Santa Cruz 6-1 to remain atop the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League standings Thursday.

Hegna beat Sasha Wolfsen 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 2 spot and Zaretsky knocked off Annelisa Timar 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3.

Santa Cruz’s win came at No. 1 singles, where three-time SCCAL champ Tallia Harper remained unbeaten with her 6-0, 6-0 win over Rebecca Fuller.

Annika Lee and Madison Phillips, Chloe Chausse and Taylor Hilger, and Jilliane Beltran and Erin Schmidt earned doubles wins in straight sets for the Mariners (6-1), who host Soquel (5-2) on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

The Mariners and Knights shared the league title in the spring.

At Soquel 7, San Lorenzo Valley 0: Isla Garcia-McDougall survived Kendall Fournier 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (12-10) at No. 1 singles and the Knights earned a sweep in their SCCAL match Thursday.

Ella Summerville, Starlyn Falkenroth and Aly Kosek, Nos. 2 through 4 respectively, won their singles matches in straight sets .

In doubles action, Alana Riling and Mia Tomaino won in the No. 1 spot, and Dani Marlatt and Ruby Storey won at No. 2, both in straight sets. The Knights won by default at No. 3.

At Scotts Valley 7, Harbor 0: Gabrielle Casper, Veronica Farquhar, Stella Cheney and Maya Bensen each won their respective matches in straight sets, and the Falcons earned a sweep in their final home match of the SCCAL season Thursday.

In doubles play, Livia Johnston and Sofia Niklaus, Liz Bahr and Samantha Warner and Kendal Wright and Erin Szymanski also won in straight sets.

The Falcons (6-2, 5-2) play at Santa Cruz on Tuesday.

Boys water polo

Soquel 17, at Los Gatos 12: Nick Graessle scored six goals and the Knights pulled away for the nonleague win Thursday.

Brody Nielsen had four goals and one assist for the Knights. Sophomore Malloy Wiens had two goals, three assists and drew three ejections and junior Nolan Nguyen also scored three goals.
Cooper Wiens scored two goals and had one penalty shot drawn.

Senior goalie Wyatt Beymer made eight saves for the Knights (14-4, 6-0), who host Los Altos (5-11) on Saturday at 10 a.m.

Los Gatos fell to 12-9.

Graessle also led the Knights with four goals in a 13-2 win over Harbor on Tuesday.

Girls water polo

At Santa Cruz 16, Harbor 2: Senior Belene Rodriguez scored seven goals and the Cardinals won the SCCAL match Thursday.

Sophomores Daisy Mueller and Zoe Ann Watson each scored three goals for the Cardinals (11-2, 5-1). Junior Sonja Ukropina scored twice and classmate Sonja Ukropina added one goal.

Alaina Peet and Camille Dayton scored for the Pirates in the second quarter.

Boys cross country

PCAL Mission Center Meet: MVC junior James Ponzio finished second out of 53 runners in the PCAL’s third Mission Center Meet on Thursday.

Ponzio finished the 3-mile course at Toro Park in Salinas in 16:12. Gilroy senior Nicholas Guzman won in 15:58.

Seniors Michael Martin (18:26; 19th) and Koen Vandenberg (18:52; 28th), junior James Rose (18:54; 29th) and sophomore Aarush Nalawadi (19:19; 35th) also scored for the Mustangs.

MVC (105) took fifth out of eight teams, finishing behind North Monterey County (42), Gilroy (88), Hollister (97) and Carmel (98) and ahead of Everett Alvarez (108), Stevenson (141), Seaside (188).

Girls cross country

PCAL Mission Center Meet: MVC junior Caelan Gilliam took fourth out of 42 runners at the PCAL’s third Mission Center Meet on Thursday in Salinas.

Gilliam finished Toro Park’s 3-mile course in 21:10. Carmel sophomore Christiana Kvitek won in 20:18, helping the Padres (15) to the team win.

Freshman Kylie Brunelli took seventh in 21:35 for the Mustangs, who had an incomplete squad.

Women’s volleyball

At Cabrillo 3, Ohlone 0: Isabella Bush and Jazmyn Tubbs each had 14 kills to lead the Seahawks to a 25-22, 26-24, 25-18 sweep in the teams’ Coast Conference North Division match Wednesday night.

Carly Ditz had 31 assists and 17 digs for the Seahawks (6-5, 2-1). Lindsay Heller had eight kills, nine assists and two digs.

Ohlone dropped to 11-7, 1-3.
