Milwaukee man uses music to connect to culture, identity

Music plays an important role in cultural connection and identity.One long-time musician uses it to share his culture with all of Milwaukee.Cecil Negron spoke to WISN 12 at Cafe El Sol on South Ninth Street."You have to learn your roots. It's so important," he said.Every day Negron shares a taste of it in Milwaukee through the sounds of Latin America."We do everything from salsa, to cumbia, merengue, bachata, to Latin jazz," he explained.For more than 20 years, his group Cache MKE has played shows across Wisconsin, including at Cafe El Sol."The music it gives us an out, it gives us a pleasure, it gives us a peace of mind," Negron said. "I think the reason we've lasted the way we have, is because of the fact that we have such a large repertoire of Latin music."He passed the tradition to his son, who also teaches others.That makes me so proud, you know, he's taking the tradition over," Negron said.Tradition, he said, is important to preserve amongst Latinos."The language, the food, let the traditions continue," Negron said.Cache MKE is hosting a "Celebration of Hispanic heritage" to close out the monthlong celebration. The free event is at 6:30 p.m. Friday with live music at Cafe El Sol, inside the United Community Center.
