Today is derby day in Greater Manchester as Bolton Wanderers host rivals Wigan Athletic in League One.

At least 20,000 fans are anticipated to descend on the University of Bolton Stadium this afternoon for a 3pm kick-off.

Ian Evatt's Wanderers sit ninth in the table at present, with Leam Richardon's Wigan third as things stand.

Should they pick up a win, Bolton can narrow the gap to their Greater Manchester neighbours to just a point in League One if they emerge triumphant this afternoon, while the Latics can get back in the top two with a win today.

These two sides have already met this season in the Carabao Cup, with Wigan edging through that encounter on penalties following a goalless draw at the DW Stadium.

But those teams were much changes that day and today, neither side will be holding anything back from the bench or leaving players out of the squad who can play and make a difference as both seek three points, as well as local bragging rights for the supporters.

We'll be live throughout the day from the UniBol to bring you all the build-up, team news, match action and reaction from today's big game to see which side can emerge on top.

And it was the Latics who did just that in emphatic style against a below par Wanderers with a 4-0 scoreline.

Wigan took the lead in the first half when Will Keane slotted home early on to put Leam Richardson's side ahead at the break.

Wanderers nearly equalised through skipper Antoni Sarcevic just after the break, but Wigan struck back with a fabulous strike from James McClean.

Callum Lang added a third before McClean scored Wigan's fourth to compound Bolton's misery.

Next up

Wanderers are next in action on Tuesday evening on the road against Plymouth Argyle and will be hoping to bounce back from today's loss.

The Latics are also in action on Tuesday night, at home to MK Dons.

Evatt on 'fearful' Bolton

I was disappointed with everybody’s performance, not just the ones that came in. I understand that derby games, you’re going to have nerves, but that isn’t a stop sign. The way we play and how we play and the bravery we show in possession, if you lack a bit of belief, you’ll get found out and today I thought we were fearful, I thought we were negative. We didn’t take risk, when we’d broken their press, we were too quick to pass backwards and they were able to regroup and reform. We conceded really poor goals, the first goal is obviously a bad mistake, whether it’s handball or not, it is, but it is what it is.

Evatt's overall assessment

Just woefully under par. We’ve had a really tough week with injuries. We’ve got obviously two out of the back four injured and Kieran Lee who has been playing out of his skin injured. Other people are playing with injuries and we were light and you can’t afford to be light against the best teams in this league and Wigan are one of the best teams. They are powerful, they’re strong, they did nothing different to what we thought, we were just under par, so credit to them.

Bolton boss Ian Evatt: "It's a humbling defeat."

It’s a humbling defeat really. We were really under par all over the pitch. It’s frustrating.

Leam Richardson on the second half stoppages

If I’m honest I don’t really know what (happened). We’re quite far away aren’t we, so I thought the officials and the police managed the game and the fans ever so well today. Apart from that, I can’t really comment because I wouldn’t know what I was commenting on.

It’s a derby game. When Bolton came to our stadium I thought they supported their team fantastically well, as we did at our place, and that’s all I saw today. I was obviously watching the game as much as I can because there’s that many moving parts, it’s tough.

Leam Richardon's reaction

The Wigan boss has been up and had his say on the big win.

I thought the pleasing part was the application. I thought how hard the team worked and the work ethic. I thought we imposed ourselves in the right times in the right areas and then thankfully we had a little bit of quality at the end of it as well.

We worked hard this week as we do and prepare for most games. I think you’ve got to respect every single team in this league. Bolton are no different, going along ever so well, a fantastic team with some fantastic players and management team so we knew we’d have our hands full today. Certainly I think the credit’s got to go to the players and then the fans have been away for far too long with games like this for a derby with two sets of fans in full voice and supporting both teams. I thought they were excellent today.

Poor performance from Wanderers to say the least, while the Latics were ruthless and clincial with their chances.
