Before Strictly Come Dancing star AJ Odudu made her debut on the BBC show, she chopped off her long braid in a bid to give herself a fresh makeover.

Using a pair of blunt scissors, AJ filmed herself laughing as she hacked at the braid until it was gone, before holding it up in the air.

But her attitude towards her hair has not always been so light-hearted, and worrying about how to wear it has been a source of pain for AJ.

The star explained she wanted to undergone a transformation before she starred on Celebrity SAS and get braids, because it would help to protect her hair during the gruelling show.

But she was concerned it would mean she wasn't recognised, or was even mistaken for another black woman in the public eye.

"I remember thinking, 'Is anyone going to recognise me with braids?' Because I’ve never been on television with braids. When I was presenting The Voice with braids, I remember thinking, 'No one’s saying anything', but I’m certainly conscious of it for sure," she told Metro.

AJ also discussed the possibility she has lost out on jobs because of the colour of her skin, explaining she never knows exactly why she wasn't picked.

"I can’t hand on heart say this is the reason, all I do know is that I don’t have that many [black] peers," she said.

"And I am conscious, and even with my hair, I think sometimes, 'Right I’ve got this show, I’ve got to have my hair like this so I don’t get my hair mistaken for any other black woman in the spotlight.'"

Last Saturday, the Strictly favourite fought back tears as she confessed she'd been worrying about her latest routine all week.

AJ almost burst into tears while speaking to host Claudia Winkleman, as she revealed she was struggling with self doubt.

She was soon left relieved but emotional again, as the judges gave her great scores for her latest routine.

It was Movie Week, and AJ and her pro dance partner Kai Widdrington performed the American Smooth to I Have Nothing by Whitney Houston, from The Bodyguard.

AJ confessed she'd been experiencing self doubt during the week ahead of the routine, but she did an amazing job on the night.

In fact, the judges Shirley Ballas, Craig Revel Horwood, Anton Du Beke and Motsi Mabuse gave her huge praise for the routine.

AJ explained: "I do feel emotional because, yeah... it's been... I have had a bit of self doubt this week and I just really wanted to execute it well.

"I didn't want to let anyone down, especially Kai because it is such a beautiful dance, so I just wanted to do it justice."

Host Claudia told her: "You did it so beautifully, you really did."

Kai kept his arm around her to comfort her as the crowd applauded her, and she was soon smiling again.

The judges gave her a total of 35 points, which is her highest scoring so far in the series.

As they remained stunned by the result, the dancing couple hugged it out before AJ thanked the judges for their feedback.

Taking to Twitter, one viewer wrote: "Aj for the Win!! Absolutely love her!!"

Another wrote: "AJ Odudu is *phenomenal*. Absolutely bloody brilliant."

A third added: "AJ and Kai were so so good. Proper acting and grace."
