Grant’s 3 TDs lead Sacred Heart to 27-17 win over Central Connecticut

Malik Grant ran ran for 183 yards on 29 carries and reached the end zone three times to lead Sacred Heart past visiting Central Connecticut 27-17 on Saturday in Fairfield.

Grant’s 4-yard touchdown run with 3:24 left in the third quarter gave the Pioneers (4-3, 2-1 Northeast Conference) a 13-10 lead.

Early in the fourth, Grant scored from 15 yards out running up the middle and breaking tackles near the goal line to extend the margin.

Marquez McCray threw for 178 yards for Sacred Heart now winners of back-to-back contests following a two-game skid. Nasir Smith ran for 89 yards on 18 carries and a touchdown for the Blue Devils (1-5, 1-1).

Wesleyan 36, Tufts 35: At Somerville, Mass., quarterback David Estevez ran in from four yards out late in the fourth quarter to lift the undefeated Cardinals past the winless Jumbos in a NESCAC game.

The winning score capped a 13-play, 93-yard drive that ate 7:21 off the clock.

Wesleyan (5-0) led for much of the game before Tufts took a 35-29 lead late in the third quarter on Michael Berluti’s fourth TD pass.

Estevez contributed three scores, rushing for 204 yards and two TDs, and passing for 270 more yards and a score. Fellow QB Ashton Scott had 71 yards passing and another TD.

Berluti passed for 314 yards and rushed for 104 and a touchdown for Tufts (0-5).

Trinity 45, Bates 7: At Hartford, the Bantams built up a 21-0 lead after the first quarter and remained undefeated with the NESCAC win at home.

Quarterback Spencer Fetter threw touchdown passes to Jonathan Girard (8 yards) and DeVante Reid (19 yards) and William Kirby rushed in from the 6-yard line to account for Trinity’s early lead.

An 11-yard second-quarter TD pass from Fetter to Girard and a 22-yard field goal by Matt Jumes gave the 5-0 Bantams a 31-0 lead at the half.

Fetter finished with 236 yards passing in addition to the three scoring passes. Kirby rushed for 66 yards and three scores. Bates falls to 1-4.
