In a pandemic-plagued year marked by empty movie theaters and quiet Tinseltown lots, Elle Magazine is honoring Hollywood’s most resilient women.
Starlets Halle Berry, Gemma Chan, Jodie Comer, Gal Gadot, Salma Hayek, Jennifer Hudson, Angelina Jolie, Rita Moreno and Lauren Ridloff will be honored at the magazine’s 27th annual Elle Women in Hollywood event on Tuesday.
Actresses Chan, Jolie, Hayek and Gemma, developed a special sisterhood bond while filming “The Eternals,” directed by Chloé Zhao.
“A lot of times as an actress, you’re that individual strong woman, or you have one sister; you don’t often have this family where you really get to know women and see all the different strengths,” Jolie told the magazine.
“Gemma’s grace and elegance and the way she walks through the world. Salma’s motherhood and power, and Lauren’s connection and intelligence. Everybody came as themselves.”
Superhero franchise veteran Godot did not portray a hero in “Red Notice,” but protected her female co-workers from onset mistreatment in real life and spoke out for peace in her native Israel, according to ELLE.
“My sense of justice is very strong,” she reportedly said.
“West Side Story” star Moreno, the first Latina to win an Oscar, has continued her decades-long activism work while enjoying a career resurgence.
“Standing up for causes may not have been the safest thing for my career, but that’s when my conscience came into play,” she told the magazine.
Berry drew from personal experience for her role in “Bruised,” portraying a fighter who is struggling both in the ring and at home, she told the outlet.
“I started my career 30 years ago when Black women didn’t really have a prominent place in the industry, so I understand what it is to fight for what you believe in.”
Hudson said it was a dream come true to get approval from the late Aretha Franklin to play her in “Respect.”
“So then for her to say she wanted me to play her, it was a dream come true,” she told the magazine.
Elle’s November issue hits newsstands Monday.
