Oklahoma Attorney General John O'Connor and more than a dozen other state attorneys general say the Biden administration is threatening parents who are expressing their views to school officials regarding their children's education.

Oklahoma Attorney General John O'Connor announced Monday that he joined a 17-state effort to prevent the Biden administration from, according to a news release, threatening parents who express their views to school officials on issues regarding their children's education."Parents who advocate for their children at school board meetings in a nonviolent way are heroes and are necessary to improve our schools," O'Connor said in the news release. "To call them 'domestic terrorists' is bullying by the Biden administration. Parents have rights under the First Amendment, and our school boards should solicit and welcome parental input. Our schools will be better educators if they will listen to the parents."O'Connor and the other attorneys general involved in the effort sent a letter to President Joe Biden and U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland. A news release says Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita leads the coalition."Parents have a First Amendment right to speak their minds to teachers, administrators and school board members," Rokita said in the release. "That’s why I’m demanding that the Biden administration immediately stop attempting to shut down parental participation through scare tactics and intimidation."Earlier this month, the U.S. Department of Justice issued a memorandum decrying a "disturbing spike in harassment, intimidation, and threats of violence against school administrators, board members, teachers and staff." The news release continues by saying Graland called for the FBI and other law enforcement agencies to monitor activities in U.S. school districts to "suppress what they deem unruly behavior."The news release from the Oklahoma Attorney General's Office says the Biden administration has not provided convincing evidence to any significant "spoke" in threats against school personnel. The news release says, "instead, these actions by the administration seem designed to chill the lawful dissent of parents who express concerns about their children’s education at local public school board meetings.""Concerned parents passionate about their kids' education are not terrorists," Rokita said. "The Biden administration and its special-interest allies need to dial down the rhetoric and respect the rights of parents to be heard."
