HOLLYWOOD, FLA. (WSVN) - As the Hollywood Police Department deals with the killing of one of their brothers in blue, they are also facing another tragedy.
Hollywood Police Lt. John Graham took his own life in the parking lot of the Broward Mall in Plantation, according to 7News sources.
Plantation Police responded to the shopping center at 8000 West Broward Boulevard, early Monday morning.
At around 3 a.m., someone called 911 from the mall.
“He’s advising of a black Charger in the Parking Lot Number 3 that has been there for 20 or 30 minutes,” said a 911 dispatcher. “It appears that there’s a male laying there on the ground outside of the vehicle.”
Graham was pronounced dead at the scene.
The officer was with the department for about two decades.
The Hollywood Police Department released the following statement on Graham’s death:
“It has been an extremely sad day for the Hollywood Police Department. One of our officers who was off duty, unexpectedly passed away. Plantation Police is handling the death investigation. No other information will be given at this time.”
Flags were lowered to half-staff at the department before it was made public that 28-year-old Yandy Chirino was killed responding to a call late Sunday night.
Members of the department are now grappling with the loss of two officers in less than 24 hours.
During a media conference held Monday, Hollywood Police Chief Chris O’Brien addressed the shooting that claimed Chirino’s life.
“Last night, Officer Chirino left the safety of his home, came to work to protect his community and tragically will not be going home to his loved ones this morning,” he said. “Officer Chirino gave his life honorably and without hesitation, protecting those in our community.”
Chirino, who was with the police department since 2017, had received multiple supervisor commendations.
“To Officer Chirino’s family, I offer you my deepest condolences.” said O’Brien. “Your son selflessly devoted his life to law enforcement. He was a great officer and will leave a lasting impact on our community.”
Hollywood Mayor Josh Levy asked members of the public to keep all the officers in their prayers.
“Each and every day, the men and women of this department dedicate themselves to protecting and serving our city,” he said. “To be here this morning united in grief is a tragic reminder of the dangers our officers face every day and the fragile nature of human life. Please hold all our officers in your prayers today.”
In addition to having flags lowered at half-staff, Hollywood Police officers are wearing black bands across their badges as they mourn the lives of those lost.
During the news conference, O’Brien took a moment to thank all of the law enforcement agencies who have offered help and support during this difficult time.
