Trojan tennis team shows grit in section tournament

ST. PETER -- Experience showed for the Worthington High School girls tennis team this fall, and in the Section 2AA individual tournament Saturday at Gustavus Adolphus College, the Trojans played at a high level against strong competition.

Head coach Mike Marquardt was impressed.

“Absolutely the best individual tournament the Trojan girls have ever had,” he said. “All players jumped to a higher level of play and maintained it throughout their matches. Very proud of the points, attitudes and grit displayed.”

Worthington ’s Marah Darling, the seventh seed in the tournament, won her first match, defeating Baylee Knott of Mankato East by a 6-1, 6-1 score. In her next match, Darling was beaten 6-0, 6-2 by Alyssa Lam of Prior Lake, the tournament’s No. 2 seed.

Kessey Aljets, the eighth seed, won her first match 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 over Marshall’s Taylor Depover. The Trojan then was beaten 6-1, 6-3 by top seed Emily Randolph of Jordan.

Trojans Ivy Jenson and Bailey Newman, seeded ninth in doubles, lost their first match 7-6 (5), 6-3 to Lillian Schmidt and Mckenna Schreiber of Mankato East.

The Trojans’ second doubles team, Taya Oberloh and Brooke Nordseth won their first match 6-4, 6-1 against New Ulm’s Lillian Merkel and Melanie Merkel. Next, they played the No. 2 seed, Payton Douglas and Lauryn Douglas of Mankato West, and lost 6-0, 6-1.

“It was incredible to see the relaxed, confident, determined level of play during all the matches which normally is displayed during practices. The bar has been set. Thank you to all the players, families and fans who have supported us throughout the year,” said Marquardt.
