MUMBAI: The Department of Posts celebrated National Postal Week and Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav from October 9-16.
Addressing a press meet Monday, HC Agrawal, chief postmaster general, Maharashtra circle, gave details about each day's commemoration.
On Banking Day October 11, nearly 50,000 post office savings bank accounts and 16,200 Sukanya Samriddhi accounts were opened via financial inclusion melas held in 254 locations.

On PLI (postal life insurance) Day October 12, 17,600 PLI and rural PLI policies were sold in Maharashtra circle, exceeding the target of 12,500. Agrawal said approximately 630 melas were conducted across Maharashtra and Goa that day, more than the desired aim of 500.
Several uninsured people were brought under the net of insurance. Special drives are also being conducted twice a month to increase insurance coverage.
On Philately Day October 13, a philatelic exhibition based on 'Journey of India @75' through postage stamps went on display at the circle office.
Special covers were released on Umaji Naik, Purushottam Kakodkar, Mohan Ranade and Maniben Patel, the "unsung heroes of Maharashtra".
