FARGO — Wadena-Deer Creek’s Madison Packer is headed to the Class 1A state tournament as a section champion.
Packer knocked off near-by rival Lauren Rutten of Staples-Motley 7-5, 6-2 in the Section 8-1A individual tournament finals Tuesday, Oct. 19, at the Fargo Courts Plus to become what is believed to be the first W-DC singles player to advance to state since 1997.
Rutten played a true second-place match and lost 6-4, 6-4 to finish third.
Packer opened the tournament with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Abby Morris of Park Rapids. Rutten topped Crookston’s Brekken Tull 6-2, 6-0.
Anna Fiemeyer and Corra Endres finished third in the doubles bracket. The W-DC duo fell to Crookston’s Emma Osborn-Emma Gunderson in the semifinals in three sets. The Wolverines’ pair rebounded with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over a Park Rapids team.
