"We want women in politics to become a full-fledged partner in power," she told reporters. "Today, I am going to talk about our first promise. We have decided that in the upcoming assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh, the Congress party will give 40% of tickets to women," Gandhi added.

UP assembly elections 2022: Congress to give 40% of tickets to women, says Priyanka Gandhi
The Congress will give 40% of the total election tickets to women for the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls, party leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra announced on Tuesday in Lucknow.

"We want women in politics to become a full-fledged partner in power," she told reporters. "Today, I am going to talk about our first promise. We have decided that in the upcoming assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh, the Congress party will give 40% of tickets to women," Gandhi added.

Tickets to women will be provided on merit, with further aims to slowly move towards 50% seats for women in the state, she said, adding that the decision has been taken considering that women will fully participate in the Uttar Pradesh elections.

"Our decision to give 40% tickets to women is for the girl in Unnao, the girl in Hathras, the lady in Dalit Basti in Lucknow, daughter of journalist Raman Kashyap," Gandhi said.

The Congress general secretary also appealed women to join politics and said that they can change everything. The party has coined 'Ladki hun, lad sakti hun (I am a girl and I can fight)' as the slogan for this campaign.

Gandhi, however, continued to remain non-committal about whether she herself will contest the elections or not.

"If you want change, don't wait. Nobody is going to protect you. People only talk, but when it comes to protection, those are protected who trample you. Today the meaning of power is that you can brazenly run over people- this is what power has come down to mean. This is wrong," she said in a recent press conference held at the Congress headquarters in Lucknow.

On October 17, Congress leader PL Punia said that Priyanka Gandhi would be the party’s face in the election campaign for the assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh next year.

The Congress leader is visiting Uttar Pradesh to review the party’s preparedness for the upcoming assembly elections.
