Carmelo Hayes Kicks off WWE NXT

One of the best parts of this segment was when Carmelo Hayes said “Who’s disrespecting the champion?!” when Johnny Gargano cut him off.

Trick Williams said “Indi has been shooting in Melo’s DM’s all week,” which brought out Dexter Lumis who appeared behind Williams and Melo the way Batman often appears out of nowhere.

Odyssey Jones def. Andre Chase

NXT could have waited an extra week for this match to be on Halloween Havoc, especially since this has been a feud weeks in the making. Instead, this was your basic TV squash match designed to showcase the promising Odyssey Jones.

For as good as a job as NXT has done developing the Andre Chase character in non-wrestling vignettes, he’s also being booked like a young Dean Douglas.

IMPERIUM def. The Creed Brothers

As little as I care about IMPERIUM, nobody was more excited than me for this match, strictly because of the Creed Brothers.

Tony D’Angelo got a lower-third, advertising he was in action tonight. NXT clearly realizes the ironic star power of the G.O.A.T. and they’re capitalizing on it.

I love that the Creed Brothers were given a match against former NXT tag team champions. Wade Barrett brought up MSK, and I think their days might be numbered as current NXT tag team champions. Unfortunately, The Creed Brothers shockingly lost.

Cora Jade def. Elektra Lopez

Continuing the theme of WTF booking, Cora Jade defeated the formerly rising Elektra Lopez. NXT seems very hot-and-cold as to what direction they want to go with Cora Jade, but there was actual consistency with Lopez until this match.

In order to get their heat back, Legado del Fantasma attacked Trey Baxter, Jade’s boyfriend, backstage.

Io Shirai def. Persia Pirotta and Jacy Jayne

The story of this match was Jacy Jayne taking an ugly bump during a suicide dive where she landed right on her face. After helping to catch a diving Io Shirai, she was promptly removed from this match to receive medical attention. Hopefully Jacy is okay.

Following an Io Shirai victory, “Spin the Wheel, Make a Deal” landed on a Stairway to Hell Triple Threat Ladder Match. Given the experience level of all involved, hopefully they’re conservative with the use of that ladder.

Tony D’Angelo def. Ru Feng

Tony D’Angelo continues to be the toast of WWE NXT after a quick win over Ru Feng, but the highlight was the most Tony D’Angelo promo ever. After being asked about the whereabouts of the WWE producer, D’Angelo questioned whether the interviewer was a “snitch” and proceeded to drop a “fuhgeddaboutit!”

Lash Legend’s producer is named “Mark,” and I don’t think that’s a coincidence.

Where is the Tony D’Angelo merch?!

Legado del Fantasma def. Brooks Jansen and Josh Briggs

There was a lot of TNA energy on this show where they were constantly going to the back, and this was one of many segments where that happened. This time around, NXT went to the back after Legado del Fantasma attacked Jensen.

After Santos Escobar, and now Elektra Lopez, took losses, Legado del Fantasma suddenly felt like they had to win this otherwise meaningless tag team match to convince me WWE hadn’t moved on from them. Fortunately, they did.

LA Knight def. Grayson Waller—Winner Hosts Halloween Havoc

After horror movie superfan Shotzi Blackheart (Halloween Havoc 2020) and serial killer Dexter Lumis (New Year’s Evil 2020) hosted NXT TakeOvers in the past, both LA Knight and Grayson Waller seem like such a basic choice to host a Halloween-themed pay-per-view.

Bron Breakker and Tommaso Ciampa vs. Grizzled Young Veterans

Even though it’s quite generic, Bron Breakker’s siren-infused theme music is awesome.

Fans barked throughout Bron Breakker’s spots in this match because they know what’s up.

Even though NXT seems to have big plans for Bron Breakker, I’m not all the way convinced his coronation will come next week based on how random tonight’s booking was. At least there will be suspense.
