Soquel girls water polo earns no worse than share of SCCAL title

Rebecca Fuller, Holly Hegna, Autumn Zaretsky and Ashley Lavender earned singles wins in straight sets, and Aptos High’s girls tennis beat visiting Soquel 6-1 to remain atop the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League standings Thursday.

The win put the Mariners in good position to repeat at league champion. They shared the crown with Soquel in the spring.

Fuller held off Isla Garcia-McDougall 7-5, 6-4 in the No. 1 slot. Lavender knocked off Aly Kosek at No. 4, 6-2, 6-3.

The Mariners’ No. 1 doubles team of Annika Lee and Madison Phillips, and No. 3 team of Jilliane Beltran and Erin Schmidt also earned wins.

Lee and Phillips survived a battle against Alana Riling and Mia Tomaino, 6-3, 7-6, 6-2.

Soquel No. 2 team of Dani Marlatt and Ruby Storey beat Chloe Chausee-Garrett and Taylor Hilger, 6-4, 6-2.

The Mariners (7-1) play at Harbor on Tuesday at 4 p.m. and host Scotts Valley in the teams’ regular season on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Harbor 4, at San Lorenzo Valley 3: The Pirates earned their first SCCAL win Tuesday in a spirited match for both teams.

Harbor won three of the four singles matches: Zulma Ramirez beat Denisha Warren 6-4, 6-3, Raven Davis beat Emi Prograce 6-3, 7-5, and Stella Kjellberg beat Cassidy Gerzfield 6-3, 6-3.

Kendall Fournier defeated Jimena Ramirez Leyva 6-0, 6-1 for SLV’s lone singles win.

In doubles action, SLV won two of the three matches.

The Cougars’ No. 1 team of Allyssa Struthers and Aliyah Bowers defeated Emily Balderas and Perla Valentin coming back from a first set loss 6-7, 6-4, 6-1.  SLV’s No. 3 team of Maya McGirney and Leila Nite won in straight sets over Morgyn Michelson and Yaqi Wang 6-2, 6-3.  Harbor won the No. 2 match with Emma Lin and Amelia Wyland defeating Mary Calden and Alia Rolland in a close three-set match with a first set tie-breaker, 7-6, 4-6, 6-2.

Harbor (1-7) hosts Aptos on Thursday.

Surfing

Quiksilver Pro France: Santa Cruz’s Nat Young tied for 49th place and earned 400 points at the World Surf League’s Quiksilver Pro France, a Men’s Challenger Series event in Seignosse, Landes, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France, on Wednesday morning.

Young finished behind Hawaii’s Barron Mamiya (13.84) and Australian Jordan Lawler (11.07), and ahead of Mexico’s Jhony Corzo (8.03) in Heat 21 of the Round of 96.

Young, coming off a third-place finish at the MEO Vissla Pro Ericeira, scored a 6.13 for his four-turn ride, but he was unable to back that score up with a decent number. His second wave was a 3.73.

Aerial specialist Mamiya pulled off an alley-oop, a counterclockwise air 360, that was scored 7.67 late in the 30-minute heat.

Young entered the event ranked No. 4 on the Challenger Series with 11,900 points. One event remains on the CS schedule: the Haleiwa Challenger, which runs Nov. 26-Dec. 7 in Hawaii.

Men’s soccer

Cabrillo 1, San Francisco 0: Alessandro Conte scored on a pass from Jael Leal in the 24th minute and the Seahawks held on for the win in their Coast Conference South Division game Tuesday.

Goalies Sean Cameron and Daniel Medina-Diaz made a combined seven saves for Cabrillo (7-2-1, 3-1-0), winner of four straight games.

Isaac Alvarez made seven save for CCSF (5-5-2, 2-3-1).

The Seahawks host division leader De Anza (8-1-3, 3-0-2) on Friday at 4 p.m.

Women’s soccer

Cabrillo 8, at Ohlone 0: Aubree Westjohn and Gisselle Vasquez Cruz each had two goals and one assist, as the Seahawks won their Coast Conference crossover match Tuesday. It was Cabrillo’s largest offensive output since beating Monterey Peninsula 11-1 on Oct. 26, 2018.

Madelyn Park had one goal and one assist. Caroline Sullivan, Jasmine Taylor and Elyanna Magdaleno also score goals.

The Seahawks (6-2-4, 3-0-2) play at Foothill (2-7-0, 0-2-0) on Friday at 1:30 p.m.

Ohlone dropped to 0-7-1, 0-4.

At UC Santa Cruz 4, Academy of Art 0: Amanda Scott scored insurance goals in the 80th and 82nd minutes, and the Banana Slugs used a second-half outburst to push their unbeaten streak to six matches Tuesday.

Ainsley Smith and Katie Herm also scored goals in the second half. Alexia Santos, Celine Ertekin, Emily De Los Santos and Karina Bulli had assists.

UCSC outshot the Knights 22-7.

Goalies Alyssa Diaz Tucker and Sam Coelho each played one half. They made a combined three saves.

Jordyn Wight made seven saves for the Knights (2-6-2).

UCSC (6-7-2) plays at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (7-2-3) on Saturday at noon.

Girls golf

PCAL Championships: Watsonville’s Bianca Ayala (113) and Jasmine Serratos (115) finished 44th and 45th, respectively, out of 74 players at the PCAL Championships at Laguna Seca Golf Club on Tuesday.

Stevenson’s Nikki Iniakov (71) was medalist. York’s Jara Gomez (73), Salinas’ Kalea Hall (74), Stevenson’s Sydney Craven (75) and Michelle Wang (76) rounded out the top five.

The CCS Championships are Nov. 2. Gabilan Division champion Stevenson (382) and runner-up Carmel (436) qualified as teams out of the Gabilan Division.

Watsonville (663) shot the lowest team score in the Mission Division. Sophia Sandoval (126; 52nd), Mariana Lobato (153; 65th) and Isabel Lobato (156; 68th) also competed for the Wildcatz.

Girls volleyball

At Harbor 3, Mount Madonna 0: Senior outside hitter Simone McIntyre had 13 kills and classmate Olive Hess added 12 kills as the Pirates earned a 25-15, 25-17, 26-24 SCCAL sweep on senior night Tuesday.

Senior middle blocker Cassandra Kemos had 10 kills and senior libero Taylan Johnson had 12 digs and five aces.

In the teams’ regular-season finales on Thursday at 7 p.m., Harbor (16-11, 8-3) plays at Aptos and Mount Madonna plays at Soquel.

Scotts Valley 3, at SLV 0: Sophomore outside hitter Grace Emanuelson had 12 kills and four aces and the Falcons won their regular-season finale Tuesday, 27-25, 25-22, 25-11.

Junior outside hitter Hannah Fleming had 11 kills and junior setter Morgan Lipman had 10 assists and three aces. Junior setter Emma Smith had 14 assists and two kills; and junior middle blocker Macy Millan had three blocks.

Scotts Valley (6-6) hosts Aptos on Monday in the SCCAL Tournament. SLV hosts Santa Cruz in the teams’ regular-season finale Thursday at 7 p.m.

At St. Francis 3, Trinity Christian 0: The Sharks earned a 25-15, 25-10, 25-15 sweep in their PCAL Santa Lucia Division match Tuesday.

St. Francis plays at Rancho San Juan in Salinas on Thursday and closes the regular season with a home match against NMC on Monday.

Boys water polo

Santa Cruz 14, at Aptos 9: Senior Morgan Barnes scored eight goals to lead the Cardinals to the SCCAL win Tuesday.

The Cardinals led 9-2 at the half.

Senior Reed Barbour and sophomore Nathan Rascon each scored twice for the Cardinals and seniors David Culver and Kai Owen each scored one goal.

Senior Isaac Kay made eight blocks for the Cardinals.

Girls water polo

Soquel 22, SLV 1: Junior Quinn Healy had three goals, two assists and three steals as the Knights secured no worse than a share of the SCCAL regular-season title Tuesday.

Junior Olivia Harris and sophomore Autumn Anstey each scored twice and had five steals. The Knights finished with 20 steals. They’ve reached that steal total or surpassed it eight times in their past 12 games.

Grace Howard, Kayla Matthies, Leah Murphy, Deijah Stephens, Amelie Stotland, Summer Stelck and Cathryn Perry each scored twice for Soquel (17-1, 7-0) and Kelsey Matthies added one goal.

Santa Cruz 14, at Aptos 9: Belene Rodriguez had six goals and goalie Jade Robinson made 11 saves for the Cardinals in their SCCAL road win Tuesday.

Savannah Babcock, Guilia DeSouza, Daisy Mueller, and Zoe Ann Watson each scored twice for Santa Cruz.

Ciera Puente led the Mariners with four goals, Fiona Carey scored three goals and Bella Abundis added two.

The Cardinals (14-2, 6-1) host Soquel in the teams’ regular-season finale Thursday, while Aptos plays at Harbor.
