ACROSS ALABAMA —Attention, high school seniors: if you’ve been putting off your college applications, crunch time is finally here. In honor of Alabama College Appreciation Week, dozens of colleges in Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina are waiving application fees for applications submitted from Monday, Oct. 18, to Friday, Oct. 22.

Applications normally cost anywhere from $30 to $60, and can often get in the way of lower-income students from applying, especially when they are considering several different schools. College Appreciation Week, started nine years ago, aims to encourage greater socioeconomic diversity in colleges by removing some of the financial barriers associated with applying. According to the Alabama Commission on Higher Education, just 58% of Alabama high schoolers graduating in 2019 went on to college, one of the lowest rates in years.

Below is an alphabetical listing of participating schools, listed on Birmingham’s official city website. Be sure to double check with the admissions office at each school, and see if there are any codes you will need.
