Kerala Rain News Today Latest Updates: Heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, lashed several parts of Kerala on Thursday. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert in 8 districts–Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Kannur.
Meanwhile, six districts–Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Kasaragod–have been put on yellow alert predicting isolated heavy rainfall. The IMD statement advised fishermen not to venture into the sea in the state as squally weather with wind speed reaching 40-50 kph is likely to prevail over the Kerala coast today.
Keeping in mind last weekâs devastating landslides in Idukki and Kottayam districts, the Kerala government, for the first time, has started evacuating people residing in landslide-prone areas in the eastern hills of the state. The district administrations have also readied fishermen with boats to evacuate people from low-lying areas.
IMD data shows that the southern state has received 135 per cent excess rain during between October 1 and 19. During the heavy spell on October 16 when the IMD issued a Red alert indicating extremely heavy rainfall, numerous incidents of landslides and other rain-related accidents were reported from the south-central districts of Kerala, resulting in at least 27 deaths. The seasonâs rainfall data on IMDâs website shows that the normal rainfall for the period of October 1 to 19 was 192.7 mm whereas the actual rainfall was 453.5 mm.

As heavy rain lashed Kerala on Thursday, several parts of the state capital reported waterlogging and incidents of house damage. A house was destroyed and 15 others were partially damaged in Vithura, a hill town in Thiruvananthapuram. According to local reports, natives are being shifted to the nearby school. Meenankal, another village in the district, also reported house collapse and flooding.

Kerala received 445.1 mm of rainfall until October 20 as against the usual 303.4 mm, IMD data showed on Thursday. India received 41 per cent more rainfall than normal from October 1-21 with Uttarakhand alone recording more than five times its normal precipitation. (PTI)

Flood ravaged Kottayam and Idukki are receiving heavy rainfall on Thursday. Koottickal, one of the worst hit in the rains is witnessing isolated rainfall since yesterday evening. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert in both districts.

Heavy rains battered Koottickal and the eastern regions of the district on Wednesday evening for almost 90 minutes leading to panic among local residents. Though the skies were clear throughout the day, the rains started by 6pm and continued till 7.30pm at Koottickal. Cooperation minister V N Vasavan who had arrived in Mundakkayam, near Koottickal, said that there was no need for any apprehensions. (ANI)

The southwest monsoon is likely to withdraw on October 26, the same day when the northeast monsoon is likely to commence over southeast peninsular India, India Meteorological Department said. The northeast monsoon brings in rains mostly to Tamil Nadu, parts of Andhra Pradesh and Kerala.

As much as 92.24% of the rainfall that is normally received during the ‘Thulam’ rain season (from October to December) have been received in the first 19 days of October, said revenue minister K Rajan. As much as 491.6mm rains (16.8%) of the total rains received normally in a year, are received during the Thulam season. From Oct 1 to 19, the state received 453.5mm rains, as against the expected 192.7mm.
Resumption of heavy rainfall has revived the flood threat in Thrissur on Wednesday evening. Red alerts have been issued for Peringalkuthu and Peechi dams. Since the flow from Parambikulam has been raised to 10,000 cusecs, there is a possibility of raising the second sluice gate of Peringalkuthu. (ANI)
While the orange alerts for heavy to very heavy rains have been called off for most districts except Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Idukki on Thursday, the India Meteorological Department has sounded a yellow alert for heavy rainfall of 7-11cm in five districts, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Malappuram. The agency has also issued warnings about strong winds in the state till October 24. The Kerala state disaster management authority has asked the public to be beware of dangers caused by strong winds which could uproot trees. People have been advised not to stand under trees to avoid rainfall or even park vehicles under trees. It has asked local bodies to ensure that any branches or trees slanting dangerously be cut down to avoid any untoward incidents.
