The Uttar Pradesh government on Saturday announced that the Faizabad railway junction would be renamed Ayodhya Cantt. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had approved the change of name and directed officials to issue a notification. “UP CM Yogi Adityanath has decided to rename Faizabad Railway Junction as ‘Ayodhya Cantt’,” UP Chief Minister’s Office tweeted. It added that the Government of India had also approved the name change.

In November 2018, the UP cabinet had cleared the proposal to rename both Faizabad district and division as Ayodhya.

The decision was based on a proposal from the Faizabad district administration, which said that Ayodhya was the capital of the “Ikshvaku dynasty” to which Hindu deity Ram belonged and it is was popularly known as his birthplace.

At the same meeting, the government decided to rename Allahabad division as Prayagraj. The month before, the district had been renamed Prayagraj. In 2017, the central government approved its proposal to rename the Mughalsarai railway station as the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya station.
