Scots are being warned to brace themselves for persistent, heavy rain over the weekend which threatens to disrupt public transport services across the country.

Forecasters have issued an overnight yellow weather warning for rain over the west of Scotland, specifically Glasgow, Ayrshire and parts of Argyll and Bute.

They say it will last from 9pm tonight until 9am tomorrow, with as much as 90mm of rain is expected to fall in certain areas, and could cause issues on public transport.

A statement from forecasters states: "A spell of persistent heavy rain, accompanied by fairly windy conditions, will set in across parts of southwest and central Scotland on Saturday evening and last until Sunday morning.

"Rainfall accumulations of 20 to 40 mm are expected quite widely, with perhaps as much as 70 to 90 mm falling in a few spots over the hills."

CalMac have advised that many of their services will be liable to disruption or cancellation at short notice due to the weather, with several already being taken out of action.

The Mallaig/Armadale/SmallIsles services have been cancelled for the remainder of the day, as well as the Fionnphort/Iona and Tobermory/Kilchoan services.

Customers hoping to travel by ferry are asked to check their journeys on CalMac's website.

Network Rail say they are not expecting any disruption, however will implement speed restrictions if necessary.
