A giant puppet of a Syrian refugee child will reach Sheffield on Friday after travelling 8,000km to get here.

Little Amal will enter the city by boat, on one of the last stretches of her journey from the Syria-Turkey border to Manchester.

The 3.5m tall artwork was created by the team behind War Horse to raise awareness of the challenges faced by young migrants.

This week she will be welcomed to Sheffield, the UK's first City of Sanctuary, with a number of festivities.

1pm - 5:15pm

Sheffield Waterfront Mini Festival

From 1pm - 4pm the Canal & River Trust will lead welcome celebrations by hosting a range of free, family-friendly activities at Victoria Quays.

There will be canoeing sessions, clay head crafting of little Amal, welcome flag craft, and a live street art demo.

The afternoon of fun will be accompanied by live music with a steel band and Bhangra performances.

Then at 4:25pm, Little Amal will enter the city by boat and arrive at Victoria Quays for a celebratory welcome by Stand & Be Counted Theatre company.

2.30pm – 6.30pm

Tudor Square Celebrations

Celebrations will be held in the city centre throughout the day.

Tudor Square is to be decorated with art installation of Quotes for Hope, which features warming messages in different languages created by a community engagement project, led by DINA, Sheffield Theatres and Off The Shelf.

There will also be performances from One World Choir and Sheffield Hallam University.

Little Amal is expected to arrive at 6pm, and she will be greeted with a dance performance piece from Sheffield People’s Theatre.

6.30pm – 7.30pm

The Peace Gardens Finale

Acting and performance students from Sheffield Hallam University will be collaborating with local artists to share video projections on the Town Hall as Little Amal moves into the Peace Gardens.

To conclude the festivities, Little Amal will then conduct a brass band with a twist.

The artwork, a team of 11 puppeteers and their entourage will be travelling through Sheffield on their way to Barnsley.

Yorkshire is one of the final spots they will visit, after leaving the Syria-Turkey border in July.

The team are on their way to their final destination of Manchester, where celebrations will be thrown to mark the end of the walk on November 3.
