The Reid Sinnett era in Miami is over.

The Dolphins’ plan to re-sign the third-string quarterback back onto the team’s practice squad if he cleared waivers was squashed Monday when the Philadelphia Eagles claimed him.

The Dolphins waived Sinnett on Saturday ahead of Sunday’s 30-28 loss to the Atlanta Falcons to make room for receiver Isaiah Ford on the active roster. Ford, elevated from the practice squad, caught his first career touchdown to cap the opening drive of the game amid a receiving corps decimated by injuries with Will Fuller (finger) on injured reserve and DeVante Parker (shoulder/hamstring) ruled out ahead of kickoff.

Miami’s plan was to subsequently bring Sinnett back if he cleared waivers.

“We’ll see the waiver wire [Monday] and see how that shakes out,” Dolphins coach Brian Flores said in a web conference with reporters before Philadelphia’s move was finalized. “If so, yeah, we’d like to get him back.”

The Eagles, shortly thereafter, completed a trade with the New York Jets, sending veteran quarterback Joe Flacco to Miami’s division rival after Jets rookie starter Zach Wilson left Sunday’s loss to the Patriots with a knee injury. Revealed Monday to be a sprained PCL, Wilson is set to miss two to four weeks.

Sinnett, undrafted out of University of San Diego, never appeared in a regular-season game for the Dolphins. He first landed in Miami after he was waived by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ahead of the 2020 season after spending training camp there.

Sinnett was promoted to the active roster on Sept. 25 as Jacoby Brissett’s backup when Tua Tagovailoa missed the first of three games with his fractured ribs. Tagovailoa has since returned for losses to the Jacksonville Jaguars and Atlanta Falcons. He dressed but did not play in three games for the Dolphins this season and two games in 2020.

The highlight of Sinnett’s time with the Dolphins was this year’s preseason finale against the Cincinnati Bengals on Aug. 29. He was 22 of 33 for 343 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in a 29-26 exhibition victory. His late 34-yard touchdown pass to tight end Chris Myarick was the difference.

The Dolphins will likely sign a new quarterback onto the practice squad this week with only Tagovailoa and Brissett on the roster.
