White House prepared to ship pediatric Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for 28 million children ages 5 to 11
The White House said it is ready to roll out the vaccine for children ages 5 to 11 as soon as it's approved.An advisory committee to the Food and Drug Administration approved on Tuesday, Pfizer's request for emergency use authorization of its vaccine for children ages 5 to 11 and that vaccine could be available as early as next week. "There are about 28 million kids 5 to 11 across the country and we have enough vaccines to be able to get them vaccinated," said White House Vaccination Coordinator Dr. Bechara Choucair. Choucair said the children's vaccine will be available at pediatricians, pharmacies, community health centers, and even school-based clinics. "So look we have to everything we can to make sure that access to the vaccine is as easy and as convenient as possible," Choucair said.The state of New Hampshire has preordered 15,000 doses and Granite State pharmacies will receive their own shipments directly from Pfizer as early as next week, if approved."Another big step in making sure our communities are protected and making sure parents and kids if it is their choice to get the vaccine that they have that accessibility," Gov. Chris Sununu said.The children's vaccine is one-third the dose of Pfizer's adolescent and adult vaccine, but still, there is some concern over the reported risk of myocarditis, an inflammatory heart condition seen in some younger people who were vaccinated."I do expect another robust discussion next week on Nov. 2 and 3 by the advisory committee to the CDC that will also look at the safety and the efficacy data so let's let that process play out and then we'll be ready once that determination is made," Choucair said.When the time comes, the state has a new tool on its website, vaccines.nh.gov, where parents can go to find vaccination locations specific to the children's vaccine.
