A special court in Chennai on Wednesday convicted an importer, who was allegedly a close aide of former DMK minister K.C Mani's son Mani Anbazhagan in a money laundering case, and sentenced him to seven years rigorous imprisonment. K. Liakath Ali was found guilty in a case related to sending illegal foreign remittances. A fine of Rs 1 crore was also slapped on him, and if not paid, he will undergo one more year of imprisonment. The court also ordered confiscation of an amount of Rs 1,75,49,253 which was attached by the Enforcement Directorate. The Enforcement Directorate had initiated a probe in 2017 on money laundering and based on an FIR, registered by the Chennai Crime Branch in 2017, and arrested Ali on April 3, 2017. (IANS)

Tamil Nadu governor R N Ravi and leaders of various political parties in the state on Wednesday extended their greetings to the public on the eve of Deepavali festival. In his message, the Governor said, "I extend my warmest greetings and best wishes to my brothers and sisters of Tamil Nadu and the Nation for a happy and green Deepavali." "Deepavali, the festival of lights is the celebration of the perpetual power of the good and its capability to conquer all evil. It tells us that truth and virtue alone triumphs in the end," he said in a Raj Bhavan release. The festival strengthens the sense of unity, goodwill and fraternity among the people of our country and inspires us to work for the service of the humanity, he added. (PTI)

Tamil Nadu DGP C Sylendra Babu has issued an advisory, appealing people to burst crackers on Diwali while strictly adhering to the guidelines issued by the Supreme Court. The police said that people can burst crackers between 6am and 7am and from 7pm to 8pm He also asked people of the state to celebrate the festival safely and to adhere to all the Covid-19 norms issued by the state government. The police also said that banned crackers should not be sold and urged the people not to buy them. The Tamil Nadu DGP suggested that children should only burst crackers under the supervision of elders. The police have also called upon people to inform the police about the presence of any suspicious persons in their localities (IANS)
