Brave teen Megan Kelly always wanted to raise cash for the cancer ward where she was treated - now her family and friends have fulfilled her wishes in her memory.

Megan, of Sunniside, Gateshead, died in December last year, aged 19, after a courageous battle against the disease.

She was diagnosed with soft cell Ewing Sarcoma, a rare form of cancer, in July 2019, when she was 18.

She went through intense chemotherapy, two operations and 32 rounds of radiotherapy and was even given the all-clear.

At the time, she rang the bell at the Teenage Cancer Unit at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle to mark the moment.

However, the cancer returned a few months later and Megan's condition deteriorated, eventually claiming her life.

Following her death, her loved ones have been raising money for charity in her honour - something Megan wanted to do herself.

She was planning a skydive as well as a rave. Now both those events have taken place.

The skydive earlier this year raised more than £12,500 for Sarcoma UK.

And the rave at the Cosmic Ballroom in Newcastle helped to raise more than £5,200. This included money donated by work colleagues of Megan’s dad Peter as well as contributions and fundraising by other friends and family members.

The cash has now been presented to ward 4 - the Teenage Cancer Unit at the RVI, where Megan was treated.

Madison Rutherford, one of Megan's friends, who organised the rave alongside pal Kieran Smith, said it had been an honour to carry out Megan's wishes.

Madison, 21, of Sunniside, a student at Leeds Beckett University, said: "To be able to raise this money in memory of Megan and to help give back to the people who she was so grateful to, we all feel it has been a very hard but an incredible journey.

"This was something Megan had organised herself and to be able to carry out her wishes has been an honour for us all.

"I will always remember Megan as a woman who embraced life, she seized every opportunity that came her way and got through every obstacle with a huge smile on her face. She was truly inspirational.

"I have been privileged to grow up alongside Megan and to be able to call her my family, creating incredible memories which I will cherish forever. Megan was truly someone who could put a smile on your face without even having to try, she is remembered by so many and loved more than words can describe. Megan is with us always."

Megan’s parents Jane and Peter Kelly said their daughter would be thankful for all the support and donations they received. They are now starting a charity in her name.

Jane, 47, added: "Megan had decided she was going to plan a rave to raise money for ward 4, she was extremely grateful for the care they provided her.

"It is with gratitude to Madison Rutherford and Kieran Smith for making her wish come true. The ward will be able to help support young people going through one of the toughest time in their lives and we are honoured to be able to present such an amazing amount of money to the ward.

“Megan was one of a kind, she brought joy to all of her family and friends. One of the things that myself and her dad will always remember Megan for is her kindness.

"Her nickname in our family was United Nations as she was always fair and just in all she did. Megan had a life force like no other, she loved life, she loved people, she lived everyday making others laugh, there was never a dull moment.

"Although we still grieve for Megan everyday and miss her with every breath we take, we are just so grateful to have been her parents and so proud of the young woman she was.

"It is because of her spirit and determination to raise money for young people with cancer that we are starting a charity in her name.

"Megan's Rose of Hope will continue to raise money and keep her memory and wishes alive."
